Ghana, Nigeria’s arch-rivals, have dropped three places to 73rd globally and 14th in Africa. This decline follows their disappointing draw and loss against Sudan.
Botswana’s Thatayaone Ditlhokwe led his team to impressive back-to-back wins over 72nd-ranked Cape Verde, accumulating +38.3 points. Consequently, Botswana rose from 147th to 140th in the rankings.
Nigeria and Botswana are poised to qualify for the Afcon finals if they secure wins in November. The Super Eagles face Benin away, while Botswana host Mauritania. Ghana’s qualification hopes hinge on beating Niger and Angola, and favourable results elsewhere.
The latest rankings demonstrate the shifting fortunes of African teams. Nigeria’s upward trajectory contrasts sharply with Ghana’s decline, underscoring the competitive nature of international football.
